I had big plans for this post today.
I was going to tell you all about the gorgeous weather we’ve been having in Seattle.
About how Jimmy and I walked to the train station last week stopping for dinner and a quick glass of wine at Baguette Box.
About how we were gifted ah-mazing seats at the Mariners game and about summer and baseball and beer and popcorn and blah blah blah because right before that game started what I can only imagine to be a monster-sized sea gull pooped directly on top of my head. There were tears. A perfectly good headband was ruined. It was so gross.
In any case, I hope you enjoy this kettle corn. Its easy and delicious and if you happen to go to a baseball game on a pretty day and you also happen to live by the sea, wear something with a hood. Let that be my lesson to you.
Homemade Kettle Corn
2 tablespoon vegetable oil, or enough to cover the bottom of your pan
1/3 cup popcorn kernels
4 tablespoons sugar
1/2 tablespoon sea salt
2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
2 tablespoon vegetable oil, or enough to cover the bottom of your pan
1/3 cup popcorn kernels
4 tablespoons sugar
1/2 tablespoon sea salt
2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
Heat oil in a medium saucepan with a tight fitting lid over medium-high heat. Add popcorn kernels and swirl around in pan to coat in oil. Cover the pan with the lid and listen for the oil to begin sizzling then add the sugar. Place lid back on pan and let kernels pop, shaking pan every few seconds to prevent the popcorn from burning. When popping slows remove pan from heat and carefully pour popcorn into a large bowl.
Add the butter (if using) and salt to the popcorn and stir with a spatula until popcorn is well coated. Serve warm or at room temperatue.

Oh, what an awful experience :(
ReplyDeleteI know- sooooo gross!!
DeleteMmm kettle corn! Yummy!
ReplyDeleteSorry you got pooped on by a bird :( I almost did this weekend too! It's never fun.
I've been really enjoying the nice weather here too! What a change, huh? It almost feels as if we went straight from winter to summer. I missed spring!
Have a great day!
Those darn sea gulls- its like dodging bullets. L O V I N G the weather- this weekend was so so dreamy wasn't it?
DeleteHow terrible! We always laughed growing up because every year we went to Disney world a bird pooped on my dad. It became a (nasty) tradition.
ReplyDeleteAt least you have pretty weather and popcorn to make it a little better. :)
Darn it! I was hoping that the odds of getting pooped on more than once worked like being struck by lightning. Oh well... it looks like the pretty weather is sticking around and there's always more popcorn :)
DeleteMmmmm kettle corn... SO good! I'm sorry about the bird pooping on your head, but it means good luck! I love that this recipe only calls for a couple tablespoons of oil
ReplyDeleteThanks Katie! I better have a lot of good luck coming my way :)
DeleteI love kettle corn, and usually only get the real stuff once per year, in the summer at an annual "fair" type thing in my hometown. Now I am craving it! Gorgeous, Sarah!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cassie! It's kind of dangerous how easy this is to make. I can't seem to stop...
DeleteI'm obsessed with popcorn, but I've never tried making kettle corn myself. Now I might have to! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Renee- you totally should!
DeleteI love the sounds that shore birds make but I'm sure I wouldn't like one pooping on my head. If it makes you feel any better, I had a New York City pigeon to that to me. No headbands were destroyed but a perfectly good hair day was ruined. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you can relate to my experience- seriously gross- might I remind you that sea gulls eat fish. yep.
DeleteI heard its good luck though :)
Nothing beats a good batch of kettle corn - I tell myself it is healthy and then eat a whole packetful ;)
ReplyDeleteCheers
Choc Chip Uru
I agree... and I like that thinking :)
DeleteThat's funny I posted popcorn today too!! That kettle corn looks so good. Cheers, Tara
ReplyDeleteNice, Tara! Looks like we're on the same snacking page- heading over to check out your popcorn post now :)
DeleteKettle Corn, how cool, I love it. You know one time my friend and I were walking in downtown Miami, we both worked at a law firm there and we had just been to lunch. Walking back a pidgeon pooped on my friend, she didn't have on a headband. Why is it that it always seem to be on someones head. Watch out for pidgeons too. Looking forward to your next post.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Pidgeon poop sounds terrible. It's like they are aiming...
DeleteOh no! I could see that a bird pooping on your head could ruin your day. It happened to me while walking down the street on a beautiful spring day in Tel Aviv. Luckily I had gone shopping and had a new shirt I could change into! I love popcorn especially kettle corn. I make it often and its always sooo good! Your beautiful photos make me crave some!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And I'm glad you were able to change your shirt! Jimmy was kind enough to scrape most of it out of my hair and I had easy access to a bathroom where I could wash the rest out but still- so gross- I washed my hair like three times when I got home.
DeleteSounds like a wonderful weekend up until the seagull incident. I think someone said it's suppose to be good luck if it ever happens to you. Not sure how that works but that's what I've been told. The weather has been amazing finally this is the Seattle I love... I actually have a tan! Farmer's tan but I'll take it. Love the photos of the kettle corn and seriously kettle corn is one of my all time favorite snacks! Looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And I've heard its good luck too- maybe thats why we're getting such pretty weather in May?! Took one for the team...
DeleteEeewww! The same thing happened to my cousin when we were little (except for the baseball game part). So gross!
ReplyDeleteBut this popcorn looks amazing. Kettle corn is one of my favorites!
Thanks Jeanne! So gross, right? Hope you are having a good week :)
DeleteHaha! What a sweet and reminiscent post, I love it. And OMG at the bird poop. Of all people... I hope you ate lots of quails after that. Anyway, great recipe! I love corn in any form. Sounds simple too =D
ReplyDeleteOMG is right Winston, I could not believe it happened! Thanks for stopping by :)
DeleteOh no! Not seagull poop! I'm sure they do it deliberately! Horrible. Anyway, moving swiftly on to the corn. Good idea to add the sugar while the corn is popping - love the sweet/salty combination.
