The decorations came down this week, although I couldn't help but snap a few photos before everything went back into boxes and under the stairs. Hope everyone is having a great start to the new year. We are off to a tropical island this week. More here soon. xoxo

cinnamon sugar persimmon chips

Remove stems then slice persimmons super thin using a mandolin or very sharp knife. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and bake at 450 degrees (F) until persimmons are crisp and edges are curled. Store in an airtight container.

A calm just settled over the house. I'm sitting at the kitchen table. Neil Halstead is on the record player and our heater has finally kicked in. Over the past three days we've had men working in almost every room of the house. They seem to have a good time here- singing and whistling and shouting. But for the first time all day, the house is quiet. Our kitchen is blocked off. The living room too. For the next few days we'll be living in between sheets of plastic, walking through a maze of furniture strategically placed throughout the house. In a fit of stress related, pre-renovation baking, I managed to squeeze in a loaf of banana bread before the kitchen shut down. It's my new favorite recipe and I've been keeping it close. The crumb is light and the crust is crisp and bits of the top crumble off with each bite. I suspect it lives somewhere in between banana bread and banana cake and I think we can all agree, that seems like a pretty good place to be.

The days here have been quiet. The good kind of quiet. Mostly. I'm getting better at it. Slowly finding my rhythm in this new house and new city. We begin our next phase of renovations soon and there are potential job prospects on the horizon. So, you know, I'm trying to enjoy it while it lasts.

garlicky kale with bacon and a poached egg

This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled.

1/2 tablespoon olive oil
1 slice of thick cut bacon, cut into bite sized pieces
3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
5 large kale leaves, trimmed and torn in bite sized pieces
1 egg, poached
salt/pepper to taste

Heat olive oil in a medium skillet. Add the bacon and cook until crispy. Remove bacon from pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant and just beginning to brown. Add the kale and cook until wilted. Remove from heat and combine bacon with kale mixture. Top with a poached egg and add salt/pepper as needed.
